The Riu Palace Mexico exceeded our expectations:From the cleaniness of every aspect of the hotel and grounds to the food, the theme restuarants, the beaches, activities and most impressive the attentive service and friendliness of the staff. We will definitely return!!
Traveler's tip:
Definitely take a taxi into Playa Del Carmen to shop, eat and stroll.Take day trips to Xcaret,Tulum and then settle back and relax on the beautiful beach.

The hospitality of this hotel was the best! The personnel made every effort to ensure that our stay was worry free. The kids enjoyed the different varities of food. Overall, it was a great experience. We can't wait to go back!

I should have believed the reviews about the HARD beds. I guess I should have asked for an egg crate foam pad because by the end of the week my back was very sore. With just a few hundred rooms, you'd think they'd invest in some comfortable mattresses.
Traveler's tip:
5th Avenue is cool...

We checked into 2 rooms on Dec 29th with 6 people in our family, and had another son with his friend arrive 3 days later. Despite the time of the year (probably the most busy time of the year) all of our rooms were together. Front desk staff were great, rooms were very clean, food was fantastic and the service was great. On the small issues that we felt we needed help with such as a sticky patio door..the staff were there to fix it immediately. We would definitely recommend this hotel and were sorry to leave after 7 days.

The only reason this hotel is not a perfect "5" is the beds are unusual(two double beds pushed together) and very hard. Other than that, this was really a beautiful spot to vacation. We brought along four twenty-something kids and they had a blast! The food in the hotel was very good and the staff could not have been more accommodating. Don't miss the fun on 5th Avenue. The food and shopping there is worth the $5.00 cab ride or better yet, the walk there (about a mile) is beautiful as well. The weather was wonderful, sunny and warm every day. The hotel was quiet at night which was very nice. By far the best part of this hotel was the beach front! We walked up and down for about a mile in either direction and no property could compare.

This was a great hotel. Lots of Europeans and losts of class. Food and alcohol was much better than expected. Only problem was that the bed was as hard as plywood. I woke up several times a night with half my body on pins and needles. Otherwise great hotel!
Traveler's tip:
The blocked off tourist street downtown was really great. It's called 5th Avenue. Need to take a cab to get there. If you want to buy cheap prescription drugs, go to the Walmart. It's two blocks from 5th Avenue. Lots of bargains on things to bring home.

Clean and very well maintained. Staff was extremely cheerful, pleasant and helpful. Room accomodations excellent. Hotel accomodations were standard in regard to the food, pools, free activities.

We stayed here from Nov.28th to Dec.6th. Great location, short walk to town or $5 cab ride. Beautiful hotel, immaculate grounds. Our junior suite was large, clean, quiet and came with a fully stocked fridge. Nothing but excellent service from the hard working staff. Food was good, plenty of choices for everyone. No problem getting reservations at restaurants. Wide beachfront and lots of chairs in the palms. They were rebuilding the beach from the hurricane but it's still ok. The warm turquiose water is the main draw anyways. Pool is a good size and has wait service. Entertainment was ok, maybe caters to older crowd. An overall good vacation. Would definately go back.
Traveler's tip:
Take the Ado bus to and from the airport. Only $8 US a person. Located downtown Playa. Also try the Colectivo shuttle vans that will take you as far as Tulum. Only $3 US from Playa to Xel-Ha. Don't really need to rent a car, public transport is efficient and cheap.

we had a party of 8 adults and we got there november 26 and this was my third trip to riu palace mexico. this hotel has great service ,good food , great rooms and it is very well situated . i had read reviews saying that the beach was a bit eroded but that it was still wide enough . the problem is nobody has mentionned that there is a lot of sharp rocks everywhere in the water, and that the water is not clear at all so you cant see where you are walking . on our very first day at the beach 3 of us got scrapes on our knees falling on rocks the second day two other members of our group got hurt also , and believe me we tried very hard to find a spot free of rocks but they where everywhere . we even tried the riu playacar next door and it was just as bad .we ended up stayind at the pool for the rest of the week . the riu palace was my favorite place to go , but i guess we will look for another resort on our next trip to the mayan riviera

Hotel staff was extrordinary and definately a 5-Star resort. The evening dinner restaurants were very good and reservations were no problem. Entering the resort presented a grand lobby, the lobby bar was enjoyable along the piano player in the early evening. We enjoyed the evening bands in the gazebo area. The courtyard was beautiful with its tile walkways and several fountains. We were fortunate to have a full moon allowing us to walk through the palm trees to the beach. We enjoyed the moon glistening off the ocean with the lights of Cozumel in the backround. Our room was more than adequate and spacious.

This was our first time in Mexico, and we would definitely visit again. The Riu Palace Mexico was outstanding in service, food, and feel. They had enough activities to keep you occupied, but if you just wanted to relax it was extremely possible. The staff was incredible, we wanted for nothing.
Traveler's tip:
We booked a trip to the Mayan ruins, at Chichen Itza, through expedia. The tour was with go natural and our guide was amazing. He was extremely knowledgeable about everything we saw and did. I would highly recommend this trip.

We have never been treated better or had so many choices for good food and drinks on any vacation we've ever taken. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful and the staff are warm and friendly not to mention the beautiful turqoise water and gorgeous beach...
Traveler's tip:
The beds are a little on the firm side so ask for an eggcrate mattress pad if it is bothersome. They are happy to put one on the bed for you..

Riu Palace Mexico was a fantastic place to vacation. It was just as beautiful as the pictures suggested and the staff was very accommodating.
Traveler's tip:
You have to make reservations for dinner each morning between 8:30 and 10:30. There was always a line of people waiting at 8:30, so if you want a specific time and place get there early each morning.

The room and beach were great. The food was barely OK at best. There are no activities to speak of unless you are over 70 and retire by 10 pm. The front desk attendents are not there to assist customers in any sense of the word. Some are very rude.
Traveler's tip:
We have always stayed at Riu hotels in this area in the past, and suggest you choose one of the others.

Everything about this hotel is fantastic! Staff was great, facilities outstanding, food and restaurants all wonderful , room was great, beach, pool, and jacuzzi superb! Could not have had a better hotel to stay at in beautiful Playa Del Carmen. Some reviews mention beds as being rather hard. Our bed had a foam topper and was extremely comfortable. Just book this hotel, you will not regret!
Traveler's tip:
Although this is a beach-front resort, there are no ocean view rooms that i could see, just courtyard views and back "garden" views.

The room initially assigned was on the side that faces next door's Hotel disco. The music was very loud and almost impossible to sleep. After the second night I requested to change. We got another room and spend the day out. When we came at 10 Pm realized A/C was not working properly. My wife and kids fall sleep but I could not. Requested this to be fixed and at 1 AM I managed to get another room.We switched room at that time and left everything on the other room until next morning. I would have expected some sort of apology from Hotel or upgrade to a better room since the Hotel was quite empty but nothing was done. On the positive side people were quite helpful in the hotel. Attractions where quite nice and food was excellent.

This hotel was worth what we spent, but I would highly recommend RIU Place Riviera Maya for those who have never been. The beach there is not as nice the Palace Mexico but the pool, food and everything else is a step above. My boyfriend and I went on a vacation. A lot of honeymooners and Europeans could be found at this hotel. Not as Americanized as Cancun, but defintely lovely. 5th Ave was wonderful. Exeursions should defintely be purchased on 5th Ave vs through the hotel.

We were very pleased with the hotel. It was never crowded. Nice, small beach, food not exceptional but quite good. Staff very helpful and always trying to make you happy. If you look for not a crowded and quite place to spend relaxing vacation, it is a right place

I did a lot of research before picking this All-inclusive hotel and I was glad to find out I made and excellent choice. Friendly staff, great accomodations, good food, FANTASTIC beach, great entertainment and drinks.... and this was all in the face of Hurricane Dean. The hotel was very communicative with it's guest on plans, weather forecasts etc. We (along with many other guests) stayed at the hotel when the hurricane hit and thankfully all went well. The hotel staff was great throughtout the whole experience and we still managed to have a WONDERFUL vacation. High praise for the staff and the hotel!
Traveler's tip:
The best part is that this hotel is located in the hotel chain complex with about 4 other hotels within walking distance. Your all inclusive pass also works at these hotels rest., bars, facilities, etc. Great perk.

-Very clean hotel. -No transportation to or from the airport offered through the hotel or expedia. -No listing of attractions offered by the hotel, you are at the mercy of the local vendors and taxies. -The humidity made the room smell like the crawl space of a house (dirt smell). -The dinner is only at the hotel you ar staying at, lunch and breakfast is at any of the Rius at the playacar. -You have to get up at 8:30am to 10:30 am to book dinner reservations at your own hotel. First come first serve and not very many slots. - They have a cheesy dress code for dinner. No shorts or tanktops at any resturant. - You are given a wristband at check-in so all the locals out in town know where you are staying. Bad idea for safety. - The pool closes at 6:00pm and no swimming after dark. - The grounds and ocean view are very beautiful. RIU, lose the rules and remember people want to do what they want at any time of the day or night.

go to xcaret and chichen itzu.

OK, it was our first vacation in ten years, since we started our family of 5 kids. That aside, this hotel was more than what we had hoped for. The beach, the service, the hotel itself were all absolutely wonderful. We learned through trial and error, that the buffet at night had more to offer us than the restaurants did. The food at the buffet was as good or better, with more variety and choices for us. All we gave up was the waiter, but for us the trade-off made sense. I would reccomend this place to anyone, without hesitation. Top Notch!
