I think this is the best option in Old San Juan. You are right in the middle of the action, the Hotel is beautiful, the service great and the athmosphere can't be beat.

Pricey, but worth it. We splurged for a 1-night stay. Reception especially, but all staff extremely courteous and friendly. The hotel, a converted old convent, is unique and breathtaking in its natural beauty and its decor. Only drawback: bed a litle lumpy and not completely comfortable. Location in Old San Juan perfect for stolling, shopping, night life, cafes, restaurants, sightseeing. (Saturday nights alive with young and old enjoying the ambiance.) Hotel offers free shuttle to Isla Verde (beach). Try the banana pancakes for breakfast!

The room we were given upon arrival wasn't the kind of room we had requested. We had to wait till the next day to talk to the manager to be moved to another one. The hotel is very nice, but it's not a "luxury" hotel.

A beautiful, spanish-colonial oasis! Will definitely return to old San Juan and the El Convento hote

I chose the El Convento because of its convenience and I wanted a central location in Old San Juan. The drive in from the airport was easy and the parking lot across from the hotel is an added plus for anyone renting a car in San Juan. Friends visited me at the hotel and everyone commented on the beautiful cloister garden where we shared an excellent lunch with family and frends.

Traveler's tip:

Near the El Convento hotel there are wonderful places for dining or sharing an afternoon drink and Tapas menu. All within walking distance from the hotel.

Stayed at El Convento during April and loved the hotel, location and friendly staff. On Good Friday we watched the Easter pageant from the balcony. The complimentary drinks and cheeses on the balcony were a lovely feature. Lots to see and experience in old San Juan and staying at El Convento was a delight as it was walking distance from all the historical sights as wekll as the wonderful shopping.Fabulous

This hotel is in the heart of Old San Juan and for location it cannot be beat. The building is very historic and charming but extremely dark, there are weird gates inside that make you feel "locked up" in a way. These are located along all of the stairways in the hotel. It is kind of strange that all of the hallways are locked up but yet the front door is never closed. The hotel is very dark in a lot of places. It is not that I hated it but its seems like it is something that you see in a museum not stay in. The pool is very small. I have seen hot tubs bigger than it was. The are is not very inviting. This hotel is wonderful to visit. To look at it is above average, to stay in though I cannot say that it is more than just average. I would not choose it is as a destination. There is just not enough to do in the hotel itself. The staff was good but at a luxury hotel I expect better. I am not trying to be picky but when you rise to a level with the price then the service and especially the amenities should follow only for the right price would I stay here again.

Traveler's tip:

Be sure to walk a few blocks and eat at La Bombonera it is delicious local food. Also check out Carli's Cafe for live jazz nightly, very quaint and charming.

The hotel is amazing, the service is great, only the directions for food are bad. They sent us to an overprized, below average, Italian restaurant across the street. Go down a few blocks and look for Marmelade. Go up a few blocks and dance salsa all night. Perfect!

Traveler's tip:

Marmelade.. a few blocks away. Organic food of superb quality!

"Only Game in Town." Rooms need better cleaning, the Continental breakfast is no more, communication among staff is iffy, but individually they are congenial and make an effort to be helpful. It is the only game in town if you want to stay in Old San Juan, which you should. We can only hope the owners spend the money to keep it First Class and worth it.

Traveler's tip:

Casa Blanca, Cassals museum, free trolly around OSJ and to El Morro, just walking and sitting and watching. Every bar and restraunt experience in OSJ was excellent.

Great hotel, very friendly and responsive staff. This hotel is listed as one of the world's best Small Hotels. If you are looking to experience San Juan you have to be in Old San Juan. Outstanding resturants close and good resturants in the hotel as well. The late afternoon wine reception is a must. Close to El Morro, shops, etc. Old world metropolitan feel.

Traveler's tip:

There are other things you will want to do in Puerto Rico. Rico Tours has the best Yungee Rain Forest tour. Worthwhile. Rent a car and drive to Ponce for a day.....or even overnight. Arecibo Observatory disappointed me, an astronomy buff.

A Hearty Recommendation!

We were in Old San Juan for 3 1/2 days, and El Convento earned its star rating. Wonderful location and a staff that had guests comfort in mind. We had registered for a standard room, but when our room wasn't ready an hour after we arrived, we were given the Vanderbuilt Suite - what a bonus. The concierge readily answered our questions about the area and made reservations for us when needed.

Traveler's tip:

The restaurant in the patio is lovely, but the service was perfunctory. The Tapas Restaurant had good service and great food. Don't miss the wine and cheese reception every evening from 6-7 and Il Perigino Restaurant across the street. It is top notch!!!

This hotel was perfect in every way, I have no complaints. I am a single man under 40 and went to PR for a short vacation. This choice of hotel was the right one. I've stayed in the perfect 5-star sterile hotels before, and this one isn't like that, it's warm and friendly. I enjoyed every single aspect of this old converted convent. There is a lot to do in Old San Juan as well. Bars line the street at the top of the hill. Everything is within walking distance. The cathedral bells rang often across the street, it had all the old world charm.

We only stayed in the hotel 1 night, we flew in a night early before our cruise, what a beautiful hotel! The service was first class, the room was beautiful, the food was excellent. There is plenty to do around there as well, lots of shopping, lots of restaurants and bars. I wish we had more time there, would definitely recommend it and go back! It's a little pricey, but everything in that area is, considering they know it's a tourist hot spot!
