Old fashioned Acapulco with solid service

Though not a perfect hotel (what hotel is?) the Elcano is still a good recommendation in Acapulco. Even the smallest rooms have ocean views, the food is good and sometimes quite good, room-service efficient, service attentive even at the busiest times. The hotel itself has a fun, retro feel, especially in the lobby. The prices, however, are a little steep.

The hotel is clean, the rooms are large, the staff is friendly. But: The sand on the beach consists of large grains, so it hurts to walk on barefoot. This is not your typical "sugar sand" beach. During our stay, the hotel leased its outdoor restaurant for a corporate party. Most hotels have a "quiet time" policy after 11pm, but this was not the case. We were on the 6th floor, and the music was so loud, we could hear EVERY SINGLE WORD from a DJ. At 12:30 am I was told that the party would end by 1am and at 1:30 am with the music still blaring I was told t that it should end by 2am. Needless to say that it continued well into the morning hours, and we got no rest.

Charm of an era past

I loved the hotel...comfortable, not pretentious, local charm that reflected another era. My only warning would be that since they don't have double paned windows, the noise at night from the partying on the beach can bring you to a point of sleep deprivation. If you want to join the parties or can sleep through anything, then it should not be a problem. The view from our balcony was spectacular. I would return.

I've been in Acapulco several times. I have friends that live there and I always stay in different places. Elcano was one of my pending spots and I could not be more satisfied. The room was clean and confortable, I had a nice ocean view(make sure to ask for the rooms at the end of the corridor, wont be dissapointed) and facilities were O.K. and well mantained. I think the best features of this place is its excellent location and clean beaches! I'm looking forward to going back soon!

Elcano Acapulco - excellent value, great hotel

My husband and I stayed at the Elcano Hotel during American Thanksgiving week. The timing was good because it is just prior to the high season, but with low season prices. Although the hotel is a few years old, it is very well maintained. All rooms are ocean/bay view and the standard room with king bed is very spacious with a large sitting area with a central round marbel table, two stuffed chairs and a small sofa. The balcony was large with comfortable teak chairs and table. Service was excellent. The restaraunt gives you the choice of buffet or ala carte. The ala carte menu was large and the food quality excellent. It included some really interesting dishes at a very fair price. Restaraunt service was prompt and attentive. Pool is good size with some interesting features like built-in jaccuzzis along one side and a "reflective tanning" area along the other side (essentially a wide area with a few inches of water designed to lay in. It's not a huge pool, but is the right size for the hotel. Plenty of lounge chairs. Many good places to eat within walking distance. Catch one of the many busses on the main drag for only 5 pesos and you can go anywhere (malls, old town, etc). On a very nice beach. For us, a very nice change from the huge all-inclusives... We would definitely return.

I've stayed in this hotel several times and I continue to think it is one of the best hotels in traditional Acapulco. I found this time that the hotel is in need of a complete overhaul, it is starting to look old (the El Cano is an Old Hotel of the 60's that has been overhauled several times). Still, if you go in a family trip or as a senior citizen, it is one of the best places to stay.

Traveler's tip:

El Cano has buffet breakfast that is really good. There is always space at the beach but be sure to select early a good spot and leave a towel or a magazine to signal it is taken. Although there is security, beware of people selling you things and keep an eye for your camera or wallet.
